I had the challenge of creating several corpses for The Last of Us Part II.
Arcade
My personal favorite is the corpse that Ellie finds on the air hockey table in the arcade in Seattle. Working from a concept, I used the original NPC head Zbrush file from Naughty Dog to sculpt the horrific work that the bloater had done on the seraphite. I added details such as the nail scratches, broken teeth and broken jaw bone to push the effect. I then added the blood and bruising to the base head texture and did the same with the clothing. The hair, additional head assets and all of the body assets were existing pieces that Naughty Dog had created previously. I also did some slight posing on the head/shoulders to get the hanging effect.
The Beach
Another big cross-discipline effort at Sony San Diego was to plus the beach scene in Santa Barbara. I assisted my colleague Keegan Edwards, who had done the majority of the work on the pillar prisoners. Taking the original NPC assets, I used the rig to pose them and attempt to imbue them with a bit of narrative. Blood, skin peeling, bruising, sweat, grime, sand, and tears/holes were all added using Substance Painter. The environment team did a lot of work on the pillars and surrounding area.
